Eminent Media Personality, Agriculture Development Activist and Ashoka Fellow (1992), Shykh Seraj has turned 56 today. In 1954, he was born on the 7th of September in Chandpur district. He was later brought up in Dhaka. From his early childhood, he is living at his Khilgaon's parental residence in a 'Joint Family', locally known in Bengali as 'Ekannoborti Poribar'. His education life passed at KhilgaonGovt.High School,Notre DameCollegeand DhakaUniversity. He received Honours as well as Masters Degree in Geography from the University of Dhaka. Since his student life, he was deeply involved with media with his cultural activities and development activities. 

 

Being a role model of the constructive and development journalism, Shykh Seraj is contributing everlastingly to the agriculture and rural life development in Bangladesh. Shykh Seraj started his media career in both entertainment and development-based programme presentation in Bangladesh Television. In 1982, he started an agricultural television documentary titled, 'Mati O Manush' (Soil & Men) as the presenter. He continued this programme for 14 years. In addition, in this programme, he pointed out work opportunities in rural and urban areas, fisheries extension, commercial poultry-farm extension, and the contemporary technologies of agriculture with which peasants started having an elaborated acquaintance. The image of the agriculture standard and the life standard of rural community started to revolutionize in an optimistic way due to this programme. Around the country, many successful agro-entrepreneurs were made. From the urban to the rural area, Shykh Seraj became a hero, a change-maker who started to live in everyone's heart. Shykh Seraj played the vital role in the agro-economic advancement. Due to his contribution to the field of development, he received many awards from country and abroad. In 1995, he received the highest and most reputed National Award 'Ekushey Padak' as the youngest ever in the history of Bangladesh. Later in 1996, he played yet another dynamic role in the establishment of the most popular and successful audio-visual production house, Impress Telefilm Ltd. Afterwards, from Impress Telefilm Ltd., in 1999, the first private digital satellite television channel in Bengali language, Channel i incepted its journey. Now, he is the Director & Head of News of Channel i. On 21st February, 2004, Shykh Seraj started a more sophisticated weekly agricultural documentary programme, 'Hridoye Mati O Manush' (Soil & Men in Heart), consisting current agriculture, economy and development information. Through this programme, every single image of agricultural and technological development success in Bangladeshand round the world is represented. Afterwards, through his planning, presentation and direction, another programme titled, 'Hridoye Mati O Manusher Daak' (Mailbox of Soil & Men at Heart), started on Channel i since December 2004. This is Bangladesh's first programme in history where a grass-root-level farmer could have an argumentative conversation with the policy makers in an inter-active conduct. On the 13th August, 2007, once again on Bangladesh Television, Shykh Seraj started his fresh programme, titled, 'Krishi Dibanishi' (Agriculture: Round the Clock). He’s the first journalist to take the initiative of broadcasting individual agro-bulletin on television. Moreover, since 3rd August, 2008, he’s working as the Editor of the first-ever complete agricultural page, ‘Mati O Manusher Krishi’ (Agriculture of Soil & Men) which is regularly published every Sunday on Daily Ittefaq. His work has crowned him in titles like ‘Farmers’ Friend’, ‘Son of the Soil’ and ‘Dynamic Personality’

 

With almost thirty years of experience in the Bangladesh media, Shykh Seraj has worked as a print and broadcast journalist, presenter and producer, exploring many problems faced by farmers and rural communities. His programmes ‘give voice’ to farmers by bringing their problems to the attention of policy-makers and government. For his relentless contribution in developing the state of farmers and knocking the policy level for boosting up farmers, he was awarded the highest honour of an agricultural journalist, United Nation’s ‘FAO A.H. Boerma Award’ for the period of 2008-2009. He’s the first-ever Bengali man and fifth Asian to have achieved this very prestigious accolade.

 

Reuters Reporter and Producer Jennifer Marostica rightly said that through his programme, Shykh Seraj had revolutionized fates of at least 100 million people. On 22nd May, 2008 AFP Worldwide published an elaborative report on Krishoker Boishakhi Anondo. Krishoker Eid Anondo has been a great revolution in the concept on Farmers’ Game Show for the very first time in Bangladesh, which has really become a very popular one. Farmers’ Health Service has also been one of the key agendas of Shykh Seraj, which has revolutionized the medical facilities for the farmers throughout the country. Meanwhile, the findings of Shykh Seraj in his programmes, has become the essential guideline for the agriculture policies of the state. During August, 2009 through a contract signing between Rahim Afrooz Super Stores and Hridoye Mati O Manush Farmers’ Co-operative Society regarding direct sell of farmers’ produce, Shykh Seraj has really played the legendary role of the connector and insisted government to take necessary action to ensure farmers’ fare price for his produce and consumers’ reasonable price for the product. The campaign is known as ‘Green Bridge’.

 

He introduced a live broadcast to enable farmers to join his programmes from remote areas and is currently working to break the digital divide by setting up an e-agriculture initiative to disseminate agricultural information to an ever wider audience. He has written many informative and historic agricultural books; noted ones are ‘Motsho Manual’, ‘Mati O Manusher Chashbash’, ‘Farmers’ File’, ‘Matir Kachey Manusher Kachey’, ‘Bangladesher Krishi: Prekhkhapot 2008’, ‘Krishi O Gonomadhdhom’, ‘Krishi Budget Krishoker Budget’ (Edited), ‘Amar Shopner Krishi’.

 

Shykh Seraj is happily married with Shahana Seraj with two sons Saqif Seraj the elder and Ashiq Seraj the younger.
