Jibon Kheya (Life-ferryboat)
The farmers of our country are the most precious and there is just no doubt in it. 85% of the population is contributing to the agro-economy of Bangladesh. This is certainly a remarkable achievement for any country. Our question is the farmers who are toiling this hard and bringing smile in our faces…millions of faces, then are we active enough to bring smiles from their faces at the same time? This is a fundamental question of conscience that has been coming into the mind of creative and effective agro-maestro, Shykh Seraj. Then, the idea of Farmers’ Health Service came into his mind, which has been really unique. From the last 20th January, 2008 till the 15th March, 2008, approximately 20,000 farmer-patients were being given primary medication. And, 8 districts were already been covered. Although Farmers’ Health Service was providing the primary health service to the farmers, but there were some critical patients to whom the primary health service was just not enough.
In that regard, on the 21st February, 2008 (The day, when Hridoye Mati O Manush Team had stepped into the 5th year of its operation), at Japan Bangaldesh Friendship Hospital, a four-bed unit Jibon Kheya (Life-ferryboat) was inaugurated. History was written on this day; of course 21st February is the International Mother Language Day. The critical farmer-patients were admitted in the Jibon Kheya Unit. Shykh Seraj expressed on this note that when this 4 unit bed will reach 400 and when a separate hospital for the farmers would come into reality, then perhaps, his dream would fulfill a bit…at least he would have the comfort that something was done for these poor, marginal farmers. Recently, a very critical patient (woman), having cancer has been shifted to the Jibon Kheya Unit.
A new concept but a worthy concept is all but Jibon Kheya. Hopefully, Farmers’ Health Service will come up with extra-ordinary ideas in the future.
